Who we are

Following in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary whose life work was devoted to giving back to the Sherpa people, The Australian Himalayan Foundation was founded in 2002 by several of its current Board of Directors who wanted to make a positive contribution to the well being of the people of the Himalaya. With a lifetime of experiences in the Himalaya and with a breadth of skills and knowledge, they share a commitment to work for the well being of the Himalayan communities, cultures and environments. We are grateful for the support of founding Director and Company Secretary at the time, Mark O'Toole.

In 2005 we were granted our Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status and with an increase in fundraising efforts we were able to commit to a range of projects and began working in close partnership with a select number of non-government organisations and local communities. In August 2009 we became a Member of ACFID and Signatory to the ACFID Code of Conduct and in 2012 we were granted accreditation by AusAID. Our successful application underpins our commitment to adhere to the highest professional standards of reporting and management.

In line with DFAT requirements as well as our commitment to high standards of program delivery, 20% of donations are spent on management and administration costs. This reflects best practice that ensures the AHF maintains robust, professional standards consistent with industry practice.
