What happened

A catastrophic glacial collapse on Nepal’s Langtang Lirung on August 26 sent a massive ice chunk plunging into the valley below. The impact struck with the force of a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, melting ice and mixing with mountain debris to form a dense and deadly flash flood.

The Lhende Khola, Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers surged by up to 9 meters, destroying homes, communities and essential infrastructure across Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading and in Tibet.

We are so thankful that all of our local NGO partners, staff and field teams are safe and accounted for.  However, thousands of families in the region lost everything in seconds and are now in need of urgent support.

Flood response update: Emergency support arrives in Nuwakot & Rasuwa

As the true scale of the catastrophic flooding in Nepal emerges, our friends at One Heart Worldwide are already in place responding. We are supporting One Heart Worldwide to deliver their emergency response and recovery to communities in need.

On August 28, AHF Founding Director Garry Weare met with One Heart Worldwide Co-CEO Surya Bhatta in Kathmandu as teams loaded trucks with essential supplies. Having worked in two of the hardest-hit districts for the past six years, One Heart Worldwide brings local knowledge, established healthcare networks and strong community ties that allow them to move quickly and effectively.

A relief team, led by Surya, has reached Nuwakot and Rasuwa and begun distributing food, water, emergency shelter and essential medicines, as well as providing critical psychosocial counselling to survivors. They will continue to assess the best path forward and what’s needed for recovery in this vulnerable region.
