5 reasons to support the Australian Himalayan Foundation
The Australian Himalayan Foundation works with some of the most disadvantaged communities in the Himalaya to address locally identified priorities through community-led development. By strengthening people-to-people connections between Australians and Himalayan communities, we enable the exchange of skills, knowledge and experience that drives lasting impact. The need is great — and so is the opportunity to make a difference. Will you stand with Himalayan communities today so people and mountains can thrive for years to come?
1. Remote communities in the Himalaya are getting left behind.
While the Himalayan region is famous for its stunning mountain landscapes, many communities who live among them are isolated and under-served. Rural health facilities often lack equipment, staff or basic utilities, and children must travel long distances to attend school. Supporting AHF is a commitment to fairness, dignity and opportunity, ensuring that where someone is born does not limit their access to a brighter, more equitable future. We believe that everyone deserves the chance to thrive.
2. Powered by local partnerships for 25 years.
For over two decades, AHF has worked alongside Himalayan communities to ensure that our programs are grounded in context, understanding, trust and collaboration. We have built in-country NGO partnerships with local organisations who know their communities best. By combining local expertise with AHF’s agility as a small but experienced NGO, we deliver culturally appropriate, community-owned programs that create real lasting change.
3. Children’s futures are at risk in the Himalaya.
In remote Himalayan communities, poverty, distance and isolation put quality education and healthcare out of reach for many children. Without timely support, these barriers can shape a child’s life. Access to schooling and healthcare doesn’t just help one child thrive, it strengthens families, improves livelihoods and benefits entire communities for generations.
4. The world’s “Third Pole” is under threat.
The Himalaya holds the largest ice and snow reserves outside the poles, sustaining major rivers and nearly two billion people. Climate change and natural disasters, including shifting monsoon patterns, floods, forest fires, landslides and earthquakes, threaten lives, homes and livelihoods. AHF supports communities to adapt and protect themselves in this fragile environment and rapidly-changing region of the world.
5. Trusted and fully accredited by DFAT
Our DFAT (the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) accreditation reflects the highest standards of governance, accountability and ethical practice, giving you confidence that your support is well managed. It requires rigorous financial oversight, careful partner selection and regular reporting, ensuring programs are effective, sustainable and designed with local communities. We operate in a lean, pragmatic and adaptive way, directing resources where they make the greatest difference for children, families and communities across the Himalaya.
