Sagarmatha Exhibition - Aarwun Gallery, Nicholls

On May 29, Canberran artists Fahmida Suma (Shoma) and Sheikh Lana (Lana) debut their exhibition, Sagarmatha at the Aarwun Gallery in Nicholls. A reflection of a journey and lifelong dream to reach Everest Base Camp, Sagarmatha is a night of art, music and cultural immersion.

Sagarmatha explores the ebb and flow of emotions, the push and pull of mother nature, and the innate beauty of the world gifted to us that cannot be expressed by words. Shoma and Lana aim to bring a little piece of their expedition back to their communities and to give back to the communities that made this journey possible. All proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to the Australian Himalayan Foundation.

About the exhibition

For these travelling companions, Everest Base Camp was more than a mere achievement or success. It was a window into their vulnerabilities and their resilience. Every step forward was a leap into self-exploration and awareness. As every breath offered less oxygen from the one before, it taught them the value of life and the bonds of humanity that keep everyone going.

Most of all, the two artists, were humbled by the love, care, and generosity of the people of Nepal, particularly who made it possible to reach Everest Base Camp. And so, Lana and Shoma have embarked on this project to give back to the people who help them all navigate the mountain, keep going when the going got tough, and embrace the beauty and brutality of mother nature.
