Peter Hillary’s Himalaya: Ladakh, Nepal, Darjeeling & Bhutan

AHF Founding Director Peter Hillary

In celebration of AHF’s upcoming 25th anniversary, we have a truly special trip on offer.

Join AHF Founding Director Peter Hillary on an extraordinary Himalayan journey supporting the Australian Himalayan Foundation and its life-changing education, health, conservation and community programs across Nepal, Ladakh and Bhutan.

Trip overview

This remarkable journey explores the Himalayan regions of Ladakh, Nepal and Bhutan, combining breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage and unique insights into the work supported by the Australian Himalayan Foundation.

We begin with four days in Ladakh, often referred to as “Little Tibet”, discovering ancient monasteries, historic forts and traditional mountain communities. A special highlight is a visit to the Snow Leopard Conservancy, an organisation supported by AHF for nearly two decades.

From Delhi, we fly to Kathmandu before travelling to Namche Bazaar in the Everest region. Against the spectacular backdrop of Mount Everest, Peter will share the story of the Hillary family’s pioneering work in the Khumbu.

Returning to Kathmandu, we meet with AHF’s local partners and learn about their education, health and environmental initiatives, including community-based fire management programs.

In Darjeeling, we enjoy leisurely walks beneath the towering peaks of Kanchenjunga, visit the renowned Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and meet some of Peter’s long-standing Sherpa friends and colleagues.

Our journey concludes in the Kingdom of Bhutan, where we explore the country’s rich cultural heritage, including Thimphu and the iconic Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery, dramatically perched above the Paro Valley.

Throughout the journey, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the people, landscapes and communities that have shaped the Himalaya, while witnessing firsthand the impact of long-term partnerships supporting education, healthcare, conservation and community development across the region.
