About the Hike

There is power in combined energy. Women (didis) who walk and talk and learn together, on a land that has born the highest mountains in the world, is a force to be reckoned with.

Brigitte Muir O.A.M., first Australian woman to climb Everest, facilitates a walk sprinkled with reflections, qi gong exercises, meditation on one side, advice on how best to walk trails in mindfulness and health on the other.

You will travel in a private bus to Shivalaya and follow the original walking trails taken by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on their way to climb Mount Everest in 1953.

The group will climb Pike Peak, and from its summit look across the entire Himalayan Range, Sir Ed’s favourite view.

You will walk through magical forests to Lura, a small subsistence farming village that has been home to Brigitte since 2007 and cross the Solu river to visit a women’s health post supported by Australian Himalayan Foundation & Action for Nepal in Taksindu.

Challenge Grade

On this moderately graded trek, the physical activity will generally:

  • not exceed 8 hours in a day
  • not exceed 5,500 metres in altitude
  • be sustained and travellers should be comfortable with occasional rough terrain
  • at any stage of a moderate trek you can expect long steep climbs and descents and a wide range of weather conditions
  • to prepare, begin training at least four to five months before your depart

As with all mountain hiking this experience will involve some steep inclines, but you are welcome to take your time and walk at your own pace. There is no rush. Yet if you want to go fast, you have that option too!

You can find more detail on challenge grade in the trip notes.

About Brigitte Muir OAM

Belgian born Brigitte Muir OAM has had a passion for adventure since she as a child, and after trying caving in high school, she embarked on a high-altitude mountaineering career that spanned over thirty years and seven continents. Brigitte moved to Australia in 1983, after falling in love with the vastness of the continent and its big skies and became Australian in 1987. Ten years later, she was at the top of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in Asia, and last on her quest to climb the highest peak on each continent.

She reconverted to storytelling, and teaching people high altitude climbing for World Expeditions in Nepal and Tibet, before dedicating herself to a small subsistence farming village in the Solukhumbu region called Lura. She has been filming there since 2007 and raising funds for women empowerment since 2009.

Brigitte’s deep connection with the land and the people allow participants a unique insight into the life of every day Tamang and Sherpa people which is neigh impossible in the more touristy of areas of Solukhumbu, Langtang and Annapurna.

The combination of Brigitte’s warm and friendly personality, expert trekking skills and local knowledge means anyone who joins this trip will create memories that will last a lifetime.
