It’s our final Day of Mountains – we do hope you have enjoyed our advent calendar!

We’d like to finish with a very short video from AHF staff and volunteers in Sydney.

From all our AHF family to yours, Merry Christmas to all, and we look forward to seeing you in 2021.

Mountain Story of the Day – What comes next?

Over the past 12 days we have shared just a few of the stories of the Himalaya.

We work with diverse communities, but there are common themes. Every person needs health care. Every child needs an education. Every woman needs safety and hope for the future. And the communities of the Himalaya need your support.

We hope you can help us keep writing mountain stories with our partners and the communities of Nepal, Bhutan and the Indian Himalaya. If you can, please donate now to support our work.

With holidays upon us, you’re going to need a bunch of books to keep you company! We asked AHF Ambassador and one of Australia’s most accomplished climbers Andrew Lock for his top 5 books about mountains and climbing. Here’s Andrew’s list – maybe you’ll find a stocking filler for someone you know??

  1. Annapurna by Maurice Herzog, because it shows the unremitting commitment and nationalistic fervour of the day to succeed regardless of the cost.
  2. Touching the Void by Joe Simpson, because it is just an extraordinary story of survival.
  3. The Fight for Everest (1924) by Edward Norton, because these boys pushed the boundaries of human achievement.
  4. Conquistadors of the Useless: From the Alps to Annapurna by Lionel Terray, because he puts the mountaineering game into perspective.
  5. The Ascent of Rumdoodle by William Bowman, because it’s a shameless spoof on the whole game.

Mountain Story of the Day – Manisha*

Manisha* is 17 years old, the youngest daughter in a family of four. Her parents are farmers with a small hut and land in a remote village. They are busy for a couple of months farming and for the rest of the year, they seek work away from home. Manisha’s family struggles to make ends meet.

In 2013, Manisha joined AHF’s school support program – her “most precious moment”. Her father says “If no scholarship, my daughter would have got marriage after five class study… I would not have capacity for … continue her grade six study.”

Now, Manisha’s hopes for her future are strong. She wants to complete school and maybe run a local business. She hopes that she can support her family in future. Help us write more stories with young women like Manisha!

Mountain Story of the Day – Inclusivity

Meet Sharada. Sharada is deaf, and teaches hearing impaired children at one of our Namuna (model) schools in the Solukhumbu region.

Sharada is an advocate for inclusive education and has worked hard to make sure her students have access to education during COVID-19.  ‘In this time of pandemic, I raise awareness through the medium of sign language nearby school’. She also prepared educational videos in sign language for her students to access online.

At AHF, with our partner REED Nepal, we are working on ensuring ALL kids have education in remote Nepal. This means helping the most vulnerable children get access to school support.

Help us write new stories for vulnerable children today!

Mountain Story of the Day – Purnima

As a teenager, Purnima was a good student. But her family was experiencing financial pressure, and couldn’t afford to keep her in the later years of school.

Purnima’s school alerted our partner REED Nepal to her situation, and AHF was able to bring her into the school support program. Thanks to this support, Purnima was able to stay in school and she studied hard.

After witnessing the devastating earthquakes in Nepal in 2015, Purnima wanted to become an engineer. She gained experience on the AHF Build Nepal Back Better program in 2017 and today she is well into her Engineering course.

When we asked her how she felt about being able to study to be an Engineer, Purnima said “AHF gave me the helping hands to fulfill my dreams”.

Help us write more stories like Purnima’s today!

Mountain Story of the Day – Climate hope

Across the Himalaya, families who depend on agriculture are struggling with uncertain and hazardous climate conditions.

That’s why AHF supports the Everest Youth Climate Initiative (EYCI). Eco-clubs help local school students learn about climate change. Tree planting and red panda conservation give young people practical things to do for the future of their world.

With EYCI we also find sustainable ways to help families who face poverty from the rapidly changing climate.

You’re welcome.

Mountain Story of the Day – Tibetan culture

In Kalimpong, AHF supports Gangjong Doeghar, a program of Tibetan language, music and dance.

Children come to learn instruments, to practice dance and to keep their heritage alive. Their rehearsals and performances are a space for all generations: the oldest member is over 60, and the youngest trainees have just started primary school. When they meet on weekends to practice, it is really like a big family.

With AHF’s help, this program is helping to preserve a centuries-old culture.

Help us write new stories with groups like Gangjong Doeghar!

Your donation on behalf of loved one can help a family in the Himalaya get immunisations against basic childhood illnesses, keep their son or daughter in school, or find new ways to work in tough climates.

You can give any amount, and because it’s online, you don’t have to wait for delivery!

Give a gift that means something more today.

Mountain Story of the Day – Mountain mums

Mountain mothers group sounds like heaven – imagine looking after babies while looking at this view! But giving birth in remote Nepal can be a dangerous proposition.

Our Nurses for Nepal program focuses on keeping mothers and babies healthy with supportive antenatal checks and immunisation for mums and bubs.

Our nurses also give women information on pregnancy, breastfeeding and general health and care for new babies. With home births more than doubling in Nepal during the pandemic, this program has been a lifeline for rural women.

Grab yourself some coloured paper, and learn how to make this pretty and simple Christmas tree. For a more advanced project, why not try a mountain goat??

A leopard-proof corral in Ladakh

Mountain Story of the Day – Snow leopards

In remote Ladakh in the Indian Himalaya, AHF has supported the Snow Leopard Conservancy Trust (SLC) since 2005. Together we work with local communities to construct snow leopard-safe corrals throughout Ladakh.

Traditionally, farmers have always built low-level drystone wall corrals, which are open and exposed to attack from snow leopards. It sometimes means their entire livestock (and livelihood) can be wiped out overnight.

By building simple wire roofs supported by wooden beams, these corrals can be enclosed, preventing snow leopards from reaching livestock. It means there is no need for farmers to kill predator snow leopards, saving more than one animal.

Mountain Story of the Day – COVID in Bhutan

How has your life looked during COVID? Karma Loday told us about the ‘new normal’ she experienced while working for our partner RENEW Bhutan.

‘Everyone is at home and there is [a] daily show of Tom and Jerry, throwing pots and pans to each other,’ she joked. At the RENEW shelter, Karma works with women and children affected by abuse and trauma. She says that women have been impacted in less visible ways during the pandemic.

AHF continues supporting Bhutanese women and children affected by domestic violence. You can help.

Need a Sunday project? Make your own prayer flags!

Prayer flags have many meanings. In Bhutanese custom, they can be used for celebrations, good omens, new beginnings, and much more. Prayer flags are traditionally made from green, red, yellow blue and white cloth printed with prayers, mantras and symbols, but you can make them from any materials you have to hand.

The common intention of prayer flags in most cultures is to spread goodwill and compassion to the universe. And that includes you. Have a lovely day.

Mountain Story of the Day – COVID in Nepal

In remote Solukhumbu, Nepal, many households don’t have stable internet and even electricity is rare. When COVID19 led to school lockdowns our partner REED Nepal produced and delivered lessons for radio. The broadcast aired to 23,000 households across the region, reaching up to 1.2 million school children with online learning.

With your support, we have been able to respond in really practical ways to COVID-19 in the Himalaya. Your donations help build resilient communities and sustainable change – thank you!
